Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys: In the Country of Men

Armacost Library, Campus Diversity & Inclusion, Redlands Peace Academy, and A.K. Smiley Public Library have received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association to host events to highlight Islam and the cultures, histories, and stories of Muslims in the United States and around the world.

We will be hosting five book-based discussions at A.K. Smiley Public Library, starting with the novel In the Country of Men by Hisham Matar. The discussion of In the Country of Men will be on Saturday September 28, 2013, 2-4 p.m.

All book-based discussions will be led by Dr. Patrick Wing, Assistant Professor of History. Copies of all the Muslim Journeys books to be discussed are available for borrowing from Armacost Library and A.K. Smiley Public Library. Due to limited space, pre-registration for the book-based discussions is strongly encouraged, but not required. This can be done through the project website (link provided below, through the Let's Talk About It: Muslim Journeys Book Discussions tab), by contacting Melissa Cardenas-Dow at the Armacost Library, or registering in person at A.K. Smiley Public Library.

We will also be hosting several film screenings and guest speakers on campus. All events are open to the public.

Celebrate the Freedom to Read

This is Banned Books Week, Sept 22-28th. It is an annual event that gathers the entire reading community in a celebration and a protest. We celebrate our freedom to read, to have open access to information, to express ideas and expand our knowledge. But we also protest against those who want to restrict our access to information and removed books from libraries.

There are some surprises when looking at a list of banned and challenged books. a list of events for this week is at http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/  More information on banned and challenged books at http://www.ala.org/bbooks/

Besides the displays and readings, this year for the first time Banned Books Week will include Twitter parties to be held Monday Sept. 23 from noon pm – 2pm, and Wednesday
Sept 25th from 2pm-4pm.
Supporters are urged to tweet using the hashtag #bannedbooksweek. And additional tags: #bannedbookparty, #heroes, @OIF, @KidsRight2Read, @freadom, @FTRF

Visit the display in the Armacost Library, join in the Twitter party and CELEBRATE!

Finding electronic resources in the library

Since the library's new website debuted last year, we've been busy gathering feedback on how to make it easier for you to find electronic resources (ebooks, articles, streaming music, and more) for your assignments.

This fall we have revised the Article Databases and Online Resources page to focus on three kinds of information "containers" frequently mentioned in research assignments: articles, journals and databases.

The page is designed to be flexible and approachable, whether you know exactly what you want or are just looking for sources that meet your needs. Thanks to the Ask Us icon, help is always one click away if you need it.

This new page replaces the old Full Text Finders page on the library website, so be sure to update the link if you had it bookmarked in your browser.

Try the new Article Databases and Online Resources page next time you need to find electronic information for a class, and let us know what you think of it!
